Asphalt shingles are available in two traditional types:  dimensional shingles and 3-tab shingles.  3-tab shingles are more economical, use less material, are thinner, but do not last as long as dimensional shingles.  Dimensional shingles are better quality, thicker, stronger, last longer, offer a large variety of architectural patterns and colors, and are more expensive than 3-tab shingles.  The 3-tab shingles usually last about 15 years and dimensional shingles usually last about 30 years.
